Does Birth Control Cause Hair Loss?

Like it or not, oral contraception has been part of American culture since the FDA approved it in 1960. It’s become one of the most popular forms of birth control and doesn’t look like its going anywhere soon. With all that said, what are the negative effects of it? Is it linked to hair loss or is that just a myth?

The American Hair Loss Association (AHLA) recognizes the pill as a safe and effective form of birth control. However, they also recognize that women should be aware that there can be effects of the pill with hair loss. In general, anything that you take that alters hormones may or may not trigger hair loss. Abnormal levels of Androgen hormones in the body can cause Androgenetic Alopecia. For this reason, the AHLA advises women, who are susceptible to genetic hair loss, use a low androgen index birth control pill. Women may also opt for a non-hormonal method of birth control.

The best route would be to consult with your doctor about your genetic predisposition to losing your hair and they can tell you the best options for birth control. If time passes and you still see your hair thinning, then it may be due to other reasons and might be time to consult a hair loss specialist.
