What is Postpartum Hair Loss?

Postpartum hair loss is the loss of hair following the birth of your baby. This is a very common occurrence and in most cases temporary. This type of hair loss normally happens between and 1 and 6 months after your baby is born. Hair growth typically returns to normal by 12 months postpartum.

What Causes Postpartum Hair Loss?

This type of hair loss is caused by hormonal changes that naturally happen in women who have a baby. Your hair goes through a life cycle just like every other cell in your body. At any given time about 90% of your hair is in the growing phase. However, hormonal changes after birth cause more hair than normal to enter the resting phase prematurely. After the resting phase, your hair sheds in preparation for new growth. Since there is a larger number of hair strands in the resting phase, it means there will be a larger number of hair strands than normal that shed once the resting phase is complete. This leads to thinning and hair loss.

Are There Instances Where Postpartum Hair Loss in Permanent?

Postpartum hair loss is a temporary condition and once your body has had time to recover and your hormones are back to normal you should see normal hair growth again. In instances where this is not the case, there may be an underlying medical condition to blame. For instance, many women postpartum will experience hypothyroidism and/or iron deficiency anemia. These are both easily treatable by your healthcare professional.
