Chemotherapy and Hair Loss: We're Here If You Need Us

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is an annual international health campaign that aims to increase the awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into the cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. It’s also a time where we support those affected by breast cancer and remember those who were not as fortunate to be alive today.

The emotional impact of going through chemotherapy can be enormous. Many women face their worst fears in losing a part of themselves through the process. One of these fears is the loss of hair. It’s important to know that IF you’re going through chemotherapy and you’re afraid of losing your hair, you’re not alone. Hair loss is actually ranked among women as the second most severe side affect from chemotherapy.

Some of the chemotherapy treatments that are most likely to cause hair loss are cyclophosphamide, etoposide, topotecan and paclitaxel. These drugs work in treating cancer because they target the cells in your body that are dividing very quickly. Unfortunately your skin, hair and nails are also dividing quickly and become innocent bystanders in the attack on your cancer. Battling the disease is hard enough. Waking up in the morning with hair on your pillow after treatment won’t happen if you call us before treatment begins.

Here are some important things to remember:

  • You may lose all of your hair or just some of it
  • Most of the time, it comes out in clumps instead of a pattern
  • In almost all cases, hair growth will resume when you’re done with your treatments

Lastly, the most important thing to remember is taking charge of your loss. If you’re going through this difficult time in your life, we strongly encourage you to call us before you begin treatment and lose your hair.
