Detecting Early Stage Hair Loss

A cause of great concern for both men and women, hair loss usually appears gradually, and individuals do not always know how to identify its early stages. New Image Hair Clinic provides hair restoration solutions for individuals at all stages of hair loss, and for both genders. For men, the earliest sign of hair loss consists of the development of a widow’s peak, or a slight recession of the hairline on either side of the temples. A widow’s peak on its own, however, does not always signify impending hair loss, as nearly all adult men develop this characteristic. Clearly not all men lose their hair, and it is common for a widow’s peak to reach a certain point and then stop progressing. In order to measure whether or not the hairline is receding, a man can compare pictures of himself from a few consecutive years. This gives an objective sense of changes to the hairline. With or without a progression of the widow’s peak, hair loss for both genders almost always involves thinning of the hair as well.

A technique appropriate for dealing with both male and female hair loss is to part the hair down the middle and look at the width of the part. If that width increases over time, then the hair is becoming thinner. Another test for hair loss consists of very slow combing. Begin with dry hair. With a white sheet in place to collect fallen hairs, comb very slowly from the top of the head forward to the front. This motion should be timed to take exactly 60 seconds. Afterward, count the number of hairs that have fallen out onto the sheet and are stuck in the comb. Less than 100 hairs is normal, more could warrant a visit to a physician. Caught early, there are numerous effective treatments for hair loss, but options diminish as hair loss progresses.
