Basic Styling Techniques to Prevent Split Ends

Your hair goes through a lot, possibly more than you realize. Shampooing, conditioning, coloring, combing, styling—it’s a grind, and after a while it takes its toll. One of the most obvious examples of this is the presence of split ends, dead giveaways that your hair is less than optimally healthy and could use a little TLC.

Once you start to develop split ends, there’s really only one way to get rid of them, and that’s to cut them off. A better option is to prevent split ends from happening in the first place. There are a number of ways you can do this, and many of them hinge on basic styling techniques.

Style Your Hair to Prevent Split Ends

Here are just a few hair styling techniques that can help you stop split ends before they even start:

Oil your hair before you wash it. One thing that really ravages your hair is daily shampooing and conditioning. Even if you only wash your hair two or three times a week, it can still take its toll. One way to protect your hair is to coat it in oil before you wash it; sesame, coconut, and almond oils can all be used to create a sheath around your hair, eliminating some of the dangers of routine washing.

Use leave-in conditioners. For those who are especially prone to split ends, leave-in conditioners can provide a simple way to reduce everyday wear and tear, including the damage done by coming, styling, or exposure to the hot sun.

Dry your hair as gently as you can. Rather than getting it all twisted in a towel, try to softly and delicately dab it dry using a soft cotton cloth. Another option is to wrap your hair in that cotton towel when you emerge from the shower, leave it for five minutes, and then just let it dry naturally.

Reduce your use of heat appliances. Hot irons, blow dryers—basically anything that produces heat is going to have an adverse effect on your hair, and could potentially lead to split ends. The more you can wean yourself off of these appliances, the healthier your hair will be. A related point: If you can switch from brushes to wide-toothed combs, that will really reduce the strain put on your hair!
