Why Some Women Lose Hair After Pregnancy

Many women experience rapid hair growth during their pregnancies—but for some women, there can be a flipside to the coin. After childbirth, women may lose their hair, sometimes at rather alarming rates.

This is what’s known as postpartum hair loss, and it takes many women by surprise. This hair loss can be significant; in fact, hair can sometimes fall out in clumps. And it can last a while, too—anywhere from three to six months following the birth.

But what do you really need to know about postpartum hair loss? Is it ultimately something you need to worry about? And are there ways to prevent it? Read on for those answers and more.

The Cause of Postpartum Hair Loss

You may not realize it, but everybody sheds hair throughout the day. In fact, the average daily hair loss is 100 hairs—perfectly normal and natural, part of the regular hair growth process. You see, hair must be shed in order to make room for healthy new hairs to grow.

When you’re pregnant, hormonal changes in your body actually prevent you from losing that hair, which is why it gets so long and so thick. When your pregnancy ends, though, the body’s hormones cycle back to normal, leading to hair loss at a significant pace. Note that you’re not necessarily losing all your hair; your body is just balancing things out, returning to a natural cycle of hair loss and hair growth.

Expectations for Postpartum Hair Loss

In other words: Don’t panic. You’re not going bald. And for some women, postpartum hair loss may not even be all that noticeable, especially if you’re breastfeeding, which can delay the process. Regardless, postpartum hair loss is temporary. Most women will find that all effects of postpartum hair loss have disappeared by the time their little one turns one.

With that said, there are certain things that new moms can do to ensure their hair remains healthy and full. Some general tips include:

  • Eat a balanced, nutritious diet, and keep taking your prenatal vitamins.
  • During your shedding season, go gentle on your hair; shampoo only when necessary, and allow your hair to air dry after a shower.
  • Avoid using irons, blow dryers, and chemicals if at all possible. Opt for all-natural shampoos and conditioners instead.
  • If your hair loss is really significant or long-lasting, don’t hesitate to ask your doctor about it.
