How to Prevent Split Ends

Nobody likes getting split ends—and the bad news is, once you get them, they don’t go away on their own. The only solution is to cut them off. A better way is to prevent split ends from happening in the first place—but how?

As it turns out, there are a number of practical steps you can take to keep your hair healthy, and split ends at a minimum. Allow us to provide you with just a few suggestions.

What Causes Split Ends?

First, though, a little bit of background is in order. What actually causes split ends? The short answer: Having hair that’s either too old or too long. The slightly longer answer: Your hair undergoes a lot of wear each day—washing, scrubbing, combing, brushing, and on down the line—and this can cause the hair’s external, protective sheaf to wear off. This, in turn, causes the hair to be exposed, weakened, and damaged—and from there, it’s all too easy for the hair to develop split ends.

How Can You Prevent Split Ends?

To avoid this fate, follow these steps.

Get your hair trimmed regularly. The best way to avoid your hair succumbing to all this wear and tear is to get it trimmed regularly, snipping away the oldest part of your hair and making room for new hair growth. Also, if you happen to see a stray split end from time to time, don’t hesitate to grab your scissors and do something about it. It’s much better to trim a split end than to leave it.

Protect your hair from rigorous washing. Another suggestion: Before you shampoo your hair, coat it in either olive oil or coconut oil, which can preserve the natural oils that keep your hair safe and strong.

Be gentle in drying your hair. Skip the blow dryer, and avoid vigorous towel use if you can. Instead, gently dab your hair dry, then let it air dry. The only exception is if you immediately have to go outside into the cold; if that’s the case, dry more rigorously, as cold weather can do immense damage to wet hair.

Use a wide-toothed comb. Invest in a comb with wide teeth, and replace it if it starts to get old or worn out.

Avoid heat appliances. Daily use of heat appliances is one of the leading causes of dry, brittle hair, and of split ends. If at all possible, find another way to style your hair.
