Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia is a common form of hair loss that affects men and women of every age and ethnicity. Although there are diverse forms of alopecia that are triggered by genetics or chronic conditions, traction alopecia is unique in the fact that it is almost always preventable, and simple to remedy if caught early.

Causes of Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia begins by continual stress on the follicles by wearing hair styles such as tight ponytails (as worn by ballerinas and gymnasts), tight weaves, or by regularly putting hair in curlers at night. Even the weight of the hair itself on individuals with especially long and heavy tresses can gradually cause tension on the scalp and result in alopecia.

Harsh chemicals, dyes, and heat treatments also play a role in weakening the roots and shafts of the hair; and when combined with frequent traction, the results are damaged follicles and hair loss. This is called CCCA (central cicatricial centrifugal alopecia), and is found most commonly among the African American Community.

Sports lovers who wear tight-fitting headgear are another group of individuals who may be affected by traction alopecia. Safety helmets worn by avid skateboarders, rock climbers, cyclists, and others can cause hair loss on areas of the scalp when friction or pressure is constantly present.

Symptoms

While the main symptom of traction alopecia is hair loss, there may be other warning signs before the hair loss occurs. This condition manifests differently with each individual case due to the diversity of causes and skin types, but there are several common signs to look out for. Early indications of the condition may include (but are not limited to):

  • Small pimple-like bumps
  • Redness or swelling
  • Itching and irritation of the scalp
  • Inflammation of the hair follicles

Noticeable scarring and irreversible hair loss can take place if steps are not taken to reverse the condition in time, so don't ignore what your body's telling you.

Prevention and Treatment

Fortunately, traction alopecia can be avoided by firstly being aware of the causes, and by taking simple steps of prevention. Some ways to avoid putting undue stress on your hair include:

  • Rotating through a variety of hair styles regularly
  • Choosing looser or thicker braids rather than tight thin ones
  • Avoiding harsh chemical treatments on your hair
  • Keeping the heat settings low when drying or straightening your hair

If you have found evidence of traction alopecia in your hair, it's probably a good time to visit your local hair loss specialist and have them conduct an examination; they will determine the extent of the damage and can give professional advice on how to proceed with treatments.

When there has been severe tissue damage, it may be necessary to administer antibiotics, supplements, or other medications to help the follicles recover. However, if the follicles are damaged beyond recovery, it may be necessary to undergo a hair replacement procedure to restore a natural healthy-looking hairline.
