What Causes Male Hair Loss?

Most people lose a small amount of hair every day—anywhere from 50 to 100 hairs. This loss doesn’t create any noticeable difference in your appearance, especially because new hair is always growing. A problem arises when this process of hair loss and hair growth is altered, due to the follicles becoming clogged or no longer producing hair growth.

There can be many reasons why the process of hair growth is altered. For one, there is the hereditary component accounting for the majority of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness, technically called Androgenetic Alopecia, is a genetic trait, which generally produces hair loss along a familiar pattern. Bald spots near the crown of the head and a receding hair line—eventually resulting in a U-shape line of hair around the side and back of the head—is the most common look of male hair loss.

Male hair loss can sometimes be caused by medical factors, as well. For example, it is well known that radiation and chemotherapy can lead to hair loss, which may diminish the ability for hair to grow back. What is less well known is that many drugs administered for the treatment of cancer, depression, heart disease, arthritis, and other conditions can have a similarly negative impact on hair growth.

There are also conditions such as trichotillomania which causes you to twist or pull your hair out as a way of coping with stress and any number of scalp conditions that can replace healthy follicles with non-producing scar tissue. The bottom line is that hair loss in men can stem from any number of factors.
