Since 1990, the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) has engaged in a wide variety of activities designed to aid in the preservation of this endangered large feline. CCF’s efforts include research, educational offerings, and conservation programs. In addition to its primary activities at its Namibia headquarters and visitors center, CCF coordinates international cheetah conservation efforts with countries including Botswana, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Iran, and other nations where significant populations still exist.
Indicative of the rate of decline of the cheetah population worldwide, between 1980 and 1990, the cheetah population in Namibia dropped from more than 5,000 to less than 2,500 animals. Today, the worldwide population is estimated to be less than 10,000 animals.
CCF has worked to develop programs to stabilize the population through cooperation with farmers who have eliminated the animal as vermin in the past, efforts to educate the public about the animal’s role in the ecosystem, and other measures to improve the health and diversity of the species throughout its remaining habitats.
