How You Can Cope with Stress-Related Hair Loss

Stress is an inevitable part of life and something that every person experiences. It can be related to a person's job, schooling, relationships with friends or family, finances, or any other aspects of someone's life. The three types of stress-related hair loss are telogen effluvium, trichotillomania, and alopecia areata. Telogen effluvium happens when the hairs go into a resting phase due to excessive stress levels. As a result, they fall out faster, and seemingly all at once.

Men or women may notice significant thinning of the hair in any area of the head. When someone experiences trichotillomania, it happens as a result of the person consciously or unconsciously pulling out strands of hair because of the stress that they are experiencing. At times, the person may feel as if they cannot stop themselves, and the hair loss becomes extremely significant. Lastly, when someone experiences alopecia areata, the hair follicles are attacked by the body's immune system, causing the hair to thin and fall out. No matter the type of stress-related hair loss that a person experiences, it can be upsetting and confusing when it happens.

What Can I Do?

The first thing that can be done when you notice that you are experiencing hair loss that you feel is related to stress is to relax and realize that you are not alone. Find ways to help calm yourself down, and deal with the stress that is currently in your life. As you see when you look in the mirror, stress not only affects the way you feel, but it can cause further stress when you notice that you are losing your hair as a result.
